OUR WORK

JUSTICE, LAW & POLICY FOR THE ENVIRONMENT & WILDLIFE

Environmental protection and wildlife conservation are reliant on the effective application of law, law enforcement, and prosecution. Hambai Wild seeks to enhance policy and legislation and use research to contribute towards disrupting environmental and wildlife crimes by advancing legal discourse and jurisprudence. Our mandate includes advocacy, capacity building, court monitoring, legal advisory, and legal research.

CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAMME

Our project seeks to engage authorities tasked with applying laws that protect the environment and wildlife in capacity building through a tailor-made and research-based exchange of knowledge and skills, that will contribute towards justice for nature, wildlife, and people.

Hambai Wild Model Water Code.jpg

MODEL WATER CODE

The Model Water Code consists of a reviewed set of statutory provisions that we recommend for adoption to regulate the use and management of water resources in the Republic of Zimbabwe or other jurisdictions.

CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION & HABITAT PROTECTION

Protecting and cultivating green spaces (including water sources) is at our core. Our climate change mitigation and habitat protection initiative seeks to rewild forests, protected areas, and communal lands with flora and fauna in Zimbabwe. This initiative will include a training programme for rangers and ecoguards that will be responsible for protecting nature and wildlife in green spaces/blue spaces.

Miti4Life: EASTERN HIGHLANDS REWILDING PROJECT

Our ‘Miti4Life’ (trees for life) rewilding project seeks to restore the landscape in a protected area in the Eastern Highlands, Zimbabwe that has been affected by exotic species, illegal timber harvesting, and wildfires instigated by annual burns. The rewilding project will aid in managing the spread and impact of the invasive species and plant 50,000 indigenous trees within a five-year timeline together with the community. This will contribute significantly towards alternative livelihoods, climate change mitigation, and habitat protection.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The economic environment in which we live combined with a lack of appreciation for nature and wildlife often exacerbates environmental and wildlife crimes. At Hambai Wild, we believe that providing alternative livelihood that leads to sustainable development in communities is an important conservation tool.

ELEPHANT PROJECT

Our elephant project seeks to use beekeeping and chilli farming as natural barriers between communities and elephants to mitigate human-wildlife conflict. Hambai Wild encourages sustainable development and alternative livelihoods whilst raising awareness about wildlife conservation and balance between people, nature, and wildlife through agriculture. Our project has partnered up with Hambai Produce which will provide communities with inputs and technical skills to start beekeeping and chilli farming and provide the market for their yield.

AWARENESS

Awareness drives that are inclusive and powered with the community, nature, and wildlife in mind, are at the heart of Hambai Wild. We believe that enhancing an appreciation for nature and wildlife, whilst raising awareness about the impact of environmental degradation and wildlife crimes will create environmentalists and conservationists in all of us.

Hambai Wild Pangolin Project .jpg

PANGOLIN PROJECT

Our pangolin project acknowledges the significance of art as an expression and a means to engage with different groups of people. Hambai Wild will initiate an annual story-writing and art competition for children aged between 6 – 12 years old on pangolin. The objective is to cultivate an interest and raise awareness about the most trafficked mammal in the world. The winners will have their submissions included in a book to be published by Hambai Wild through partnerships with reputable publishing companies.
